Hot as Hades

by Daniel

This past weekend was absurdly hot. The weather was humid and noisome. Sonia and I attended a Catholic wedding in Red Wing. I had previously been under the influence that the wedding was going to be a Lutheran service, but it was actually an amalgamation of both Lutheran and Catholic services. It turns out that the bride was the roommate of a Lutheran pastor’s daughter. The wedding subsequently took place at a Catholic church, but both the pastor and priest shared the marriage service. I was also quite surprised at the shortness of the wedding. It seemed to only last a mere twenty minutes or so but was quite ceremonious.

But the wedding this past weekend was more than just hot. The venue literally caught fire. The wedding reception took place at the Red Wing Country Club (which ironically was one of the venues we had been considering for our reception). Shortly after being seated for dinner it began to smell as if someone “snuffed” out a candle. Smoke began to pour out of the vents. Soon after everyone evacuated the venue – and waited outside while two fire trucks, two police cars, and two electricians stormed the building. The weather made the situation much more uncomfortable. It was an hour or so later that we were allowed inside the building again. I can’t imagine what the bride was thinking. The important thing is that she got married and no one got hurt.

The trip home was just as exciting. Some powerful storms shook the Twin Cities this past Saturday night. I now understand why the ancient Israelite and Canaanite peoples were so terrified of them. I am afraid of storms. I am also afraid of driving. Saturday night was a double-whammy. And speaking of whammy’s—Sonia’s parents adopted a Golden Retriever named Charlie. He’s a real beauty. It’s amazing how much things can change overnight.

I wish you a great beginning of your week. Be productive. Be safe. And take care.
