Harry Potter

by Daniel

Do you remember when the Harry Potter books were supposedly condemned by the Church? Magic is evil! Oogie boogie! There’s always a resurgence of anti-magic and wizardry “stuff” whenever a new Harry Potter book or movie comes onto the scene—yet no one has a non-antiquated reason for it. It reminds me of a book I read for Dr. Gaiser’s “Healing in the Bible” class about miracles and magic in the Bible. There’s a thin, inextricable line between magic and miracle, but still the conservative religious right cries, “Harry Potter is the work of the Devil!” That’s right—the Devil (ha-Satan), the man with horns, a pitchfork, and red pajamas is at work in this whimsical fifth-grade level children’s literature. Holy bologna! Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince hit the box office earlier this week. If I were you I would expect a big conservative (theologically—not necessarily politically) uprising in protest of the book series and movie, and likely protest from the other end of the spectrum too. Regardless, we’re going to see it tonight. Though Sonia doesn’t like it when I say it “Harold Potter” instead of Harry potter—I like to push her buttons and say it anyway. I did my “sinful” thing of the day by buying some Junior Mints to smuggle in (instead of paying four bucks for a box) and I’m ready to go. The Devil is already at work I guess. Well, I hope you have a wonderful night. Take care.
