More of the SCUPE
by Chase
Today we did quite a number of interesting things at SCUPE. One of those things was talking with one of the 3 pastors who started SCUPE 30 years ago. His name is Rev. Dr. David Frenchak and he is currently serving as President of SCUPE. We talked about Empire theology vs. Urban theology which was nice because we're all in class hoping to learn about urban ministry and theology is an important component of every ministry.
The major difference between the 2 is that empire theology demands conformity and enforces mandates through power and coercion while urban theology and urban ministry accepts and demands diversity. After all, communities and people in the city are diverse and segregated. Of course we talked about powers and principalities and prophetic vision. I like his definition of prophetic vision, "Seeing a reality beyond what is immediately visible."
That definition can mean so much, but at the very least I think it challenges prophets and preachers more generally, to really see a reality and to be a witness to it. He also told us that they have a nickname for Rev. Dr. Yvonne Delk: Yvonne "Justice" Delk. I like that too.
